It’s a battle of two highly skilled teams tonight in the ‘Flon, with an important two points in the standings up for grabs.
The Nipawin Hawks (20-13-1-4) currently trail the Flin Flon Bombers (24-14-0-0) by just three points in the Bauer Conference standings, with just 15 games remaining after tonight’s game.
The Bombers have lost just four times on home ice this season, with all four of those losses coming in the past six games at the Whitney Forum. The Hawks look to find success for the third consecutive game in Flin Flon, using 5-2 and 4-3 victories as inspiration.
For the Bombers, the other two losses came to teams in the other division, so Nipawin has an advantage that no other Bauer Conference club has; the ability to win at the Forum.
Both clubs are sure to be tested tonight with offence that could be among the SJHL’s best and defense and goaltender that are easily also tops in the league. Davis Jones and Devin Buffalo have proved all season they are capable of leading their teams, and they are also both now off to NCAA schools next season to boot, thanks to save percentages both over .920!
Up front for the Hawks is newcomer Eli Lichtenwald, who has given the Hawks an extra weapon to use, as he can use his 6’6” frame in any situation. Carter Berg gives added size to the back end, which is something the Hawks knew they needed heading in to the playoff stretch.
Flin Flon has heavily relied on the offence of their top defenceman this season, Josh Roach. He currently leads the team in points, with Brett Boehm and Riley Storzuk not far behind in terms of production.
Keys for the game are simple, play a hard game for 60 minutes and you’ll be successful. That is one thing I have learned from BOTH of these teams this season; if it isn’t a 60 minute effort, the result probably will be a loss.
If Doug Johnson can keep his boys sparked up and energized, they shouldn’t have trouble tonight. The Bombers have won just 3 of their past 8 and it is a safe bet to say that a few quick goals for the Hawks will send the wind out of the Bombers sails.
On the home side, the Bombers will just need to bring a hard checking and hard working game to the rink tonight. On a cold streak, it’s important to set the tone early in order to turn it around so watch for the Bombers to come out hard and get lots of shots early.
After missing last weekend, Jordan Liem is back to full health and will be in the lineup tonight. No word on who starts.
